An Empirical Exploration of a Human and Technology Rise Conference in Gdansk University of Technology

An Empirical Exploration of a Human and Technology Rise Conference in Gdansk University of Technology conference took place on March 24, 2022.

The conference organised by the Space Science Commission of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Baltic Sea and Space Cluster and the Polish Space Agency in cooperation with the Gdansk University of Technology started the third cycle of conferences planned for 2022 and 2023 at many universities. It consisted of three traditional sessions: Young Stars, applications’ and research.

The Young Stars session was characterised by exceptional innovation, evident in all presented papers, which include: Martyna Paternak, Determination of phenological phases of cultivated cereals using Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data; Artur Łukasik, PW-Sat2 deorbit sail effectiveness analysis from the perspective of orbital parameter measurement; Dominik Duda, Mental state of the participants during analog lunar mission; Dominika Lech, Michał Kropski, Bartosz Kryński, Jakub Sulewski, 6 wheeled Martian vehicle; Rafał Markowski, High-performance Grid Fins for missile control; Mateusz Czapski, Bartosz Rybacki, Wojciech Wysocki, Lessons learned during SRAD hybrid rocket motor development. The chapter of the competition for the best Young Stars presentation awarded the prize to Dominika Lech, Michał Kropski, Bartosz Kryński and Jakub Sulewski for the presentation “6 wheeled Martian vehicle“.

The applications’ session covered new topics and all speeches were professional in nature. This evaluation applies to the papers delivered: Alfred Naskręt, A Man on an Automated Vessel; Tomasz Lisiecki, A Man in the Virtual World; Maciej Brzozowski, A Man in an Automated Port – PORT HAMBURG Case; Maciej Lang, A Man as a utilizer of integrated hydrographic, topographic and photogrammetric data.

The third session was of academic nature. The authors presented the state of the art on the following topics: prof. Marek Galewski, See more see better – neural networks in image processing; prof. Piotr Szymak, Autonomous biomimetic underwater vehicles with silent undulating propulsion, prof. Krzysztof Lipiński, Fundamentals of mechanics towards applications in multibody robot-based manipulatorsystems; prof. Krzysztof Falkowski, Some discussion remarks on development of UAV unmanned aerial vehicles; prof. Marcin Dornowski, Neurofeedback EEG in lowering the stress reaction during analog lunar mission; dr. Paweł Chyc, Technological freedom in outer space; dr. Magdalena Konopacka, The EU Regulatory Approach to Algorithmic Decision-Making; prof. Mirosław K. Gerigk, Challenges associated with control of autonomous underwater vehicles; dr. Maciej Henzel, A voice in discussion on development of unmanned aerial vehicles; prof. Ryszard Kłos, A voice in discussion on the UUV and AUV unmanned vehicles.

In the concluding remarks of the conference, speakers pointed out that the knowledge of new technologies, management and law in the field of space sciences still resembles an “archipelago of artificial intelligence”, consisting of many islands, which are not connected to each other within a system forming a specific WHOLE. The search for a common denominator is still the biggest challenge for the organisers of a series of planned conferences.
