GMU Authorities at the ‘Inspired by the Sea’ ceremony in Tczew

Tczew was officially reintegrated into Polish territory on 30 January 1920. The symbolic union made under the Treaty of Versailles was carried out by the soldiers of the Pomeranian Front under General Józef Haller. The same year, following an order given by General Józef Leśniewski, Tczew was named as the location for the newly established Maritime School.

Following the 105th anniversary of the above events, the students of today’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie 1st High School in Tczew prepared a ceremony under the slogan “Inspired by the Sea” that was attended by the Rector of Gdynia Maritime University, Professor Adam Weintrit, the Dean of the Faculty of Navigation, Professor Tomasz Neumann, the Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Professor Piotr Jankowski, the Dean of the Faculty of Marine Engineering, Professor Andrzej Miszczak, and a delegation of students.

HM The Rector Professor Adam Weintrit gave a guest lecture entitled “Casual Observations on Chosen Historical Events Connected to Geographical Discoveries.” The lecture recalled important historical moments that have helped shape the nature of seafaring today. Professor Weintrit reminded the audience that it was in the same building that is today home to the 1st High School in Tczew that Polish maritime education was formed and the history of the oldest maritime school in Poland that relocated to Gdynia in 1930 began.

Professor Weintrit also spoke of the exceptional lecturers who joined the newly established school in Tczew. He also spoke of the graduates of the 1st High School in Tczew who are now employees of Gdynia Maritime University, such as the Dean of the Faculty of Navigation and the Director of the Maritime Operation Department.

The students of the 1st High School of Tczew prepared an inspiring, marine-themed artistic performance.

Following the official part, The Rector toured an exhibition entitled “From Tczew to the SEAS AND Oceans of the World” that was specially prepared for the occasion. The exhibition illustrated the common roots and longstanding cooperation of the 1st High School in Tczew with Gdynia Maritime University, as well as presenting the profiles of outstanding staff and graduates of our University and distinguished citizens of Tczew.
