Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. and the Port of Gdańsk Authority S.A. signed an agreement on the expansion of access infrastructure to the deepwater transshipment terminals of the Port of Gdańsk. The Port of Gdańsk handled over 355,000 railway wagons.

The construction of a second railway bridge and rail connection is of strategic importance for strengthening access to the Port of Gdańsk terminals and improving the supply of strategic goods to the Polish economy. This is crucial for Poland’s economic and energy security.

The Northern Port is home to the most important terminals for transshipping containers, bulk cargo, crude oil and products, and gas. These specialized deepwater terminals account for over 80 percent of transshipments at the Port of Gdańsk. Naftoport handles 50 percent of the Port of Gdańsk’s transshipments. Gaspol and the Northern Port pump and store cargo here. These three ports are crucial to the country’s energy security. Container transshipment at the Baltic Hub exceeded 2 million TEU this year. The Baltic Hub’s transshipment capacity is 4.5 million TEU.

Three stages of the investment are planned. A feasibility study (Stage I) is scheduled for 2026-2027. Design documentation (Stage II) is to be completed in 2028. Construction of the railway infrastructure at the Port of Gdańsk (Stage III) is scheduled to begin in 2034. The project includes the modernization of existing railway lines, the electrification of the railway network, and the construction of new railway track sections. Project tasks will be financed with European Union funds.

Rail access to both ports was improved, for which over PLN 3 billion net was allocated from the CEF financial instrument – Connecting Europe Facility, in the years 2019–2024.
