Polish Naval Academy – awarded projects built by scientists and students

By Marek Grzybowski

Polish Naval Academy scientists and students have built the Korum, an unmanned surface catamaran designed for the detection and classification of underwater objects, and the Nerpa Shadow, an autonomous underwater weapon system. Both projects have been recognized by the Ministry of National Defense.

The Korum BSM is an unmanned surface vehicle designed to detect objects using side-scan sonars and a neural network. The Korum BSM is dual-purpose. It can support both military operations and civilian inspection and search operations.

First place in the “Combat Systems” category was taken by Jakub Papierz – leader, Nikodem Pastwa and Arkadiusz Żynda for designing the BSM Nerpa Shadow. This is an autonomous, biomimetic underwater vehicle with an active and passive hydroacoustic detection system for combating submarines and surface ships.

Second place in the “Reconnaissance Systems” category was taken by the designers of the BSM WHISPER-Echo, consisting of Mikołaj Żabiński – leader, Szymon Poznański, and Kordian Słowa. This is a two-way hydroacoustic communication system. It has a two-way hydroacoustic communication system enabling data exchange and remote control of underwater vehicles.
