Ship Technology Center – STARTER Study Visit and Capacity Building

A study visit to the Ship Technology Center, a member of the Baltic Sea and Space Cluster, took place in Gdańsk on April 23, 2026. Representatives of the Pomeranian maritime business participated in the event. The visit was organized by STARTER, the Gdańsk-based business support center. Jan Dobinski, Mateusz Weryk, and Wojciech Rytlewski presented the Technology Center’s activities for the shipbuilding industry and industrial safety. Julia Halemba organized the meeting.
The Center for Research, Design, and Aerodynamics has been operating since 1971. It is a leading research and design center supporting the development of ship technology and the maritime industry in Europe. It has model pools, wind tunnels, acoustic chambers, and fire chambers.
The CTO is a modern, multidisciplinary center conducting model testing of ships, yachts, and racing kayaks. It conducts aerodynamic, fire-resistance, and noise tests in ship spaces and office and residential buildings. It performs analyses and designs for ship designers and builders, the offshore industry, and other industries. The CTO has technologically advanced laboratories.
The CTO determines whether completed designs and products comply with national and international technical standards.

Members of the Baltic Sea & Space Cluster, Subsee team conducted ROV trials at the Maritime Advanced Research Centre (CTO S.A.). These tests enabled further refinement of the Nautilus-Scout ROV developed by the Polish company SR Robotics, and its adaptation to Smart Nautilus requirements for inspection and biofouling management operations.
Subsee in cooperation with Smart Nautilus developing the Electronic Biofouling Management Platform, a solution supporting biofouling management. Following a series of tests at CTO, system has been successfully deployed on vessels in international commercial fleet. The project was presented by Artur Słoboda and Paweł Kwiatkowski, managers of Subsee.
During the visit, business representatives participated in capacity building using
the BLUEDOTS Project methodology.
