XII National Conference of Maritime Law at the University of Gdańsk

“LAW OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN MARITIME ECONOMY” was the leading topic of the 12th National Conference of Maritime Law at the University of Gdańsk. The conference was organized by the Department of Maritime Law of the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Gdańsk, the Maritime Economy Research Center of the University of Gdańsk and the European Law Students Association ELSA Gdańsk. The conference took place on April 18, 2024.

The conference began with statements by representatives of the administrative authorities and the University of Gdańsk: Dr. hab. Sylwia-Mrozowska, prof. UG – Vice-Rector for Cooperation and Development of the University of Gdańsk, Dr. Magdalena Adamowicz – Member of the European Parliament, Katarzyna Gruszecka-Spychała – Vice-President of Gdynia for Economy, Piotr Kryszewski – Deputy Mayor of Gdańsk for municipal services, dr hab. Małgorzata Balwicka-Szczyrba, prof. UG – Vice-Dean for Education of the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Gdańsk, Ph.D. Dorota Pić, prof. UG – Head of the Department of Maritime Law of the University of Gdańsk.

ELSA and the Department of Maritime Law and the Maritime Economy Research Center have the know-how to organize a conference in which we combine the knowledge of scientists and law practitioners with people from the economic and maritime business, public administrations and NGOs – said Prof. Dorota Pić, Head of the Department of Maritime Law at the University of Gdańsk, President of the Port of Gdansk Authority.

The first session MARITIME E-ADMINISTRATION IN THE BLUE ECONOMY focused on digitalization in maritime administration. Paweł Krężel, director of the Maritime Economy Department at the Ministry of Infrastructure, discussed the legal basis for introducing electronic solutions in administration. The practice of using IT in maritime administration was discussed by Anna Stelmaszyk-Świerczyńska, director of the Maritime Office. The use of digitalization in the shipbuilding industry and navigation safety was presented by Dr. Eng. Krzysztof Kołwzan, PRS. EU legal regulations and the use of IT solutions in the decarbonization of shipping were presented by Dr. Dominik Wałkowski from Wolf Theiss.

The topic of the second session was DIGITIZATION IN SUSTAINABLE SHIPPING. Ph.D. Sylwia Majkowska-Szulc discussed the principles of electronic transmission of information regarding ships calling at EU ports. Dr. Zuzanna Pepłowska-Dąbrowska, UMK, talked about the civil liability of unmanned ship operators. Marek Lewandowski from TUiR Warta SA discussed the challenges for insurers regarding unmanned ship insurance. Dr. Dominika Wetoszka from the University of Gdańsk discussed the legal aspects of the use of AI in shipping.

SMART AND GREEN SEAPORTS was the third panel. “Green ports” in EU legislation were the subject of a presentation by Prof. Monika Adamczak-Retecka and Agnieszka Górka from the University of Gdańsk. The use of new technologies in sustainable management in a marine terminal was presented by Katarzyna Denc from BCT in Gdynia and Dominika Milion from Baltic Hub. Dr. Beata Szymanowska from the Port of Gdynia Authority and Dr. Hab. spoke about the innovativeness of a seaport, using the example of the Port of Gdynia. Hanna Klimek and Dr. Janusz Dąbrowski from the University of Gdańsk.

This year’s conference will traditionally be preceded by a panel for young scientists, which took place the day before the conference, on April 17, 2024.
